For Pilgrims and Sponsors to Ponder
The Walk to Emmaus is effective only if
pilgrims tend to their souls. Christian discipleship does not depend on information,
technique, or spiritual exercise. It depends on the formation of our spirits into the
image of Christ so that we can witness to Christ in the church and in the world. Followers
of Jesus have been called the Christiana, "the little Christs," because they
reminded people of Jesus. One of the reasons people leave or stay away from the church is
because churches bear so little resemblance to the Lord. Recently, I met a parishioner's
beautiful ten-year-old granddaughter. Her name was Christiana, and I asked if she knew
where her name came from and what it meant. When I told her its meaning, she beamed with
joy. What would happen to congregations if they knew who they were and what their name,
Christian, really meant?
Many churches
are filled with burned-out clergy and laity. They have tried to do the impossible: To be
Christian and to function as the church without a vital connection to Christ in piety,
study, and action. Without Christ, long-term, consistent obedience is no more good news
for the church than it was for Nietzsche; and the church may die bitter, angry, and
insane, as he did. Leaning how to love God is our best witness and our best defense
against burnout and wrong turns on the journey. Loving God prepares us to hear God's call.
Emmaus is not spiritual busy-work. It should not be divisive. The church needs disciples
who love God, themselves, and other people in Jesus' name and are able to speak and act
from the perspective of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Unless pilgrims make
their spiritual or devotional lives a priority, the effects of Emmaus will be short-lived,
without long-term obedience or a constant direction.
